Respected and loved by coaches, teammates and fans around Australia, Gabi Simpson has helped lead the Queensland Firebirds to an unprecedented era of success since joining the club in 2013 – four years, four grand final appearances and two championship wins. Gabi was a grand final game-changer in 2016, and her lightning speed, anticipation and bullet passes have earned her regular Diamonds selection in the past two seasons.
In August 2017 Gabi was named netball’s best player. She has capped a season in which she played every minute of every game by winning Australian netball’s highest individual honour, the Liz Ellis Diamond. The Liz Ellis Diamond is awarded for outstanding performance by an Australian player across the international and domestic stage, and was presented in Melbourne as part of the 2017 Australian Netball Awards.
As well as her achievements with the Firebirds, Simpson played in all 13 international tests across 2016 and early 2017.
More recently Gabi represented the country again competing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games playing a pivotal part in Australia claiming the silver medal. She captained the Firebirds again to the finals this season and is a part of the Australian Diamonds squad for the upcoming Quad series in September.
Gabi has experienced first-hand the role pasta plays in improving her performance on the court. “It wasn’t until I went to a nutritionist that I started to eat pasta for dinner and lunch 2 days out and I was absolutely amazed that I was able to last a full game directly as a result of eating two extra bowls of pasta”.
